THE RABBIT CURSE
UNEASINESS IN POVERTY BAY. By Telegraph.—Press Associatipn. Gisbome, Last Night. Poverty Bay district is menaced by a rabbit invasion, the pest being in 'great numbers in Wairoa, Opotiki and the surrounding districts. Efforts are being made by the East Coast Rabbit Board, who are appointing inspectors. Large staffs of men in the localities mentioned have done a great deal towards keeping down the pest, but Inspector Turner, of Wairoa, reported recently that a rabbit had been discovered a(\ the back of the Park racecourse, three miles from Gisbome. A reward has been offered for its capture, but so far without result. A further report was received a few days ago that a rabbit had been seen between Hick's Bay and Whangaparoa, some distance up the coast in a locality in which rabbits had not hitherto been seen. Some uneasiness has been caused by the report, and in each case stringent measures are being taken of a precautionary nature.
