It is reported from Winnipeg that the body of a British subject has been found on the international boundary line, near the town of Nech, in Xortlr Dakota. Foul play is suspected. The Neclie immigration staff was recently dismissed in consequence of alleged ill-treatment of immigrants. Two telephone employees swear that deceased was confined illegally by .the immigration officers, DETECTIVE SECURES DAMAGES. London, March 31. Detective Dew lias recovered £4OO /damages from the Daily Chronicle for libel in a cablegram alleging that Crippen, when arrested, related to Dew the complete story of the crime. Plaintiff stated that he had never made any communication to the press on the subject. Eight actions are pending against other papers. SALVAGING THE BUTESHIRE. i London, March 31. A steamer towed the abandoned barque Buteshire for 25 hours, but had then to abandon her as the decks were awash. THE GERMAN NAVY.' Berlin, March 31. Count Reventlow states, in an article, that the year 1917 will see the end of the transition period in German shipbuilding, and 1010 the beginning of the automatic building of two battleships and a cruiser yearly. CAPITAL AND LABOR. London, March 31. Lord Robert Cecil, at a meeting of the Labor Co-partnership Association, said that the relations between capital and labor in Britain were a serious social danger, and the only possible remedy .was co-partnership, which was valuaDle from all points of view. GOLD IN A GRAVEL PIT. Ottawa, March 31. While razing the chimney of a burnt hotel at Cochrane, Ontario, a workman found a speck of gold in the mortar, and discovered that it came from a gravel pit. The news leaked out, and the inhabitants, headed by the Mayor, stampeded the gravel pit, and dozens of claims were staked out for trial. ALASKAN LAND FRAUDS. Ottawa, March 31. The English group of coal claims in connection with the Alaskan coal lands frauds has opened. Counsel for the defence at the outset asked for a verdict of not guilty, on the ground that the indictment did not charge defendants with any crime. SOUTH AFRICAN DEFENCE. Capetown, March 31. The Union Government will construct extensive coast defence works under the new Imperial scheme. A NEW CABLE. Berlin, March 31. The cable from Enulcn to Brazil, via Tcneriffc, has been opened. A CHARGE OF FRAUD. -London, March 31. Measures lias been remanded on bail on a charge of having falsified a balancesheet. EXPLOSION ON A CRUISER. Berlin, March 31. By an explosion on the cruiser Torek, ! at Kiel, three men were killed and four ! injured.
