RED DEER HERD. By Telegraph.— Press Association. Dunedin, Last Xight At a meeting of tlio Acclimatisation Society to-day, complaint was made regarding the treatment of the Society by the (iovcrnnient with reference to the red deer herd. It was stated that the (Jovcrnuieiit had gone ag-.iiv.st the society at every point, It was decided that application he made to the Government for a subsidy of a pound for pound on the expenditure on the red deer forest, and, in event of the application being refused, the society will seriously consider the question of further management of the herd.
PRICE OF MILK ADVANCED. Dunedin, Last Night. A meeting of the Dairymen's Association was held to-night to consider the question of revising the tariff for milk, this action being necessitated by the pro longed spell of dry weather. It was stated that conditions had never before, been so unfavorable for dairying, the drought, and its consequent shortage of pasture and water for stock, being unprecedented. The following tariff will come into operation on May h—Halfpint li/ a d, pint 2Vfcd, pint and a half 3%d, quart 4%d, over quart 4d per quart, two gallons or over Is per gallon. These prices are the highest in the niatory of the Association.
BLUFF HARBOR STAFF. Invercargill, Last Night. The Bluff Harbor Board has decided to make a complete change in its pilot staff. This will involve the resignation of the Harbormaster (Captain Macdonald) and all the other pilots. The alterations arc to be given effect to at an early date. In the case of Captain Macdonald, the Board has resolved to acknowledge his 23 years' service by presenting him with a cheque for a year's salary as from the date of his retirement.
STEALING AND RECEIVING. Dunedin, Last Night. At the Police Court to-day, David Colin McLean pleaded guilty to charges of stealing two pieces of silk, valued at £0 2s Gd, the property of the D.1.C., and of stealing a quantity of goods, valued at £22 4s, the property of Mrs. Dreaver. Accused stole the goods while employed by the firms mentioned. John Roy Belford pleaded guilty to receiving two pieces of silk from AfcLean, knowing them to have been stolen. The police stated that both accused had given them every assistance after arrest. Both accused were admitted to bail.
EMPLOYERS' 'FEDERATION. Wanganui Last Night. W. Pryor, secretary of the N.Z. Employers' Federation, has. been in Wanganui for a few days, and, ns a result of his visit, a large increase in the membership of the local Employers' Association has been secured. HON. T. 'MACKENZIE. Wanganui, Last Night. The Hon. Thomas Mackenzie arrives in the morning. He will open the new additions to the Cosmopolitan Club during the afternoon, and will attend a banquet in the evening. TTMARU NEWS. Timaru, Last Night. The Harbor Board to-day (its last meeting) resolved to recommend to the incoming board to procure an up-to-date tug, preferably to order. The chairman (Mr. Cniigie, M.P.) hoped it would be built in New Zealand, if possible. The overtime pay of the men employed mooring and unmooring vessels was raised from Is Gd to 2s per hour. The Customs revenue for the financial year was £34,071), an increase of £BI3O on that of last year, the previous record. Not much rain has fallen, but the sky is still overcast. More is hoped for. The senior cricket competitions wound up on Thursday as follow:—Celtic (twoyear club) 21 points, Timaru 20, South End 8, Temuka 3. Celtic also won the junior championship. HARBOR AMENDMENT ACT. Auckland, Friday. An anomaly has been discovered in the schedule of the Harbor Amendment Act by which electors in town and road board districts in those counties in which there is a county council will be debarred from voting in the harboi board election next month. The eotmties affected are Waitemata, Raglan, Waikato, and Waipa. The counties unaffected are Eden and Manukau.
MEAT IS UP! I Wellington, Friday. ' Owing to the high price of stock the Wellington butchers have decided to raise the price of prime cuts of meats from to-morrow. , DROUGHT IX WELLINGTON - . Wellington, Friday. < The dry weather still continues. Only a little over a quarter of an inch ol rain fell during the month ending today, as compared with over seven and a half inches for the previous month. SURTAX REMOVED. Wellington, Friday. The surtax of one per cent, imposed on November 23, 1909, on tobacco, cigarettes and cigars, and of 2 1 / s per cent, on all other dutiable goods, ceases to-day, the end of the financial year. One result of the impending changes has been the filling of bonds with all sorts of dutiable goods which will not be cleared till to-morrow. A DISPUTE SETTLED. Greymouth, Friday. The mining dispute at Blackball, which resolved itself at last to the question of pillar workers and truckers, has been amicably arranged and a new agreement entered upon but not yet signed. The terms were accepted by the Miners' Union in conference with the manager and Wcstport representatives of the Coalmine Owners' Association late yesterday. Work was resumed as usual to-day.
SERIOUS BUSH FIRES. I Masterton, March 30. j Serious bush (ires have occurred to the north of Masterton. The whole of the country between Peep of Day and Pori is now ablaze. The timber on this country, which has been felled about ten to twelve years, comprises heavy matai, rimu and white pine, and is 'blazing furiously. Fire-fighters are kept busy with buckets and wet sacks saving house property. Nothing but a heavy down pour of rain can now stav the fire, which crossed the Tiraumea 'river and swept onwards through a mile block of green bush on the Pori side in a couple 1 of hours. The Tiraumea Vallev is now a mass of flames. Owing to the rapid' progress of the five farmers had considerable difficulty in removing their stock.
