AMUSEMENTS

s A PIANOLA RECITAL. i Last evening a large number of people I o-athcred in St. Mary's Hall at the mi' vitation of the British and Continental ; Piano Company to hear a pianola recital. | Mr. R. Neville Renaud manipulated the ' wonderful instrument, and the pieces selected were of a varied nature, each by one of the masters. Absolute mechanical perfection is reached by the use of ' the instrument, and in the hands of so i capable an exponent of its uses as Mr. Renaud it is possible to infuse the requisite expression. The "programme opened with Mendelssohn's "Overture to the Midsummer Night's Dream," and this composed was represented also by "TheOvertures to Hebrides." Rubinstein's "Concert Study in G" (Op. 23, No. «) was ' received with gladness, as also was the "Ondine Study in D Flat." Chopin's "Etude in E Minor," and his "Socturn, in G" (Op. 37, No. 2) were delightful numbers, and highly appreciated. The programme also included the "Staccato Caprice" of Max Vogrich, Liszt's "Mephisto Waltzes" and the famous "Erf King" (Schubert Liszt). The audience was a highly appreciative one, and there is no doubt future pianola recitals given by the British and Continental Piano Company will be equally popular. DOLORES. Mr. W. R. Remington, representing Mr. J. T. Muir, who is directing Mdlle. Antonia Dolores' tour through New Zealand, was in town yesterday in connection with her song recital, to be given here on Wednesday, April 5. Since the opening night (February 0) at Invercargill, Dolores has been singing to packed houses. BICGRAPH PICTURES. The crowded audience whieh attended the change of programme at the Theatre Royal on Saturday night was in every way fully satisfied with the selection of films screened. The new list comprises five star films, three by the A.B. Co., namely, "In Life's Cycle," "A Summer Idyll" (two powerful love stories), and "The Broken Doll" (a thrilling tale of the Indian Reservation). The other star pictures are "The Lady and the Burglar" and "Lost in the Soudan," the lastnamed a finely kinematographed military story of love, hate and treachery in the great African desert. "The Pathe Gazette" is a good edition, and fast 'becoming one of the most popular items. The educational pictures are well represented with "A Trip on Lake Lugano," "Sweedish Artillery" and "Feeding Seals," the last being an exceptionally interesting nature study of these peculiar creatures. ,The comic films are most laughable, and the collection includes "Kill the Fly," "Acroplaning Gaze" and "Turning the Tables.'' The full programme will be repented to-night, ami again on Friday evening.
