A Hobart cablegram reports the death of David Taylor, of St. Johnstone's estate, the famous merino sheep breeder.

London cablegrams state that the following officers who have been appointed to the New Zealand Defence Force are sailing:—Captain A. Moore by the lonic, Captain Jacob by the Ruahine, Captain H. O. Knox by the Turakina and Major G. Johnston by tho Tongariro, and that Captain McArthur Onslow of the lew Lancers has also been appointed for service in New Zealand.

Mr. Charles Cuming, who has for some years occupied the post of agricultural editor of the New Zealand Times with conspicuous ability and success, las been appointed editor of the publications issued by the Department of Agriculture. Mr. Cuming's work has always been distinguished for the technical knowledge displayed and for clearness of expression. (For some years he has been a familiar figure at the agricultural shows of Taranakl The Hon. T. Mackenzie, Minister for Agriculture, arrives in New Plymouth to-night. To-morrow he trill be present at the unveiling of the pioneer obelisk, and on Friday he will visit the North Egmont and Stratford Mountain houses. The Stratford Chamber of Commerce desires to banquet Mr. Mackenzie on Friday evening, but it is not known* whether the other arrangements that have been made in connection with the Minister's visit will permit of this.
