Great interest is being taken in our annual sports which are to be held on April 12th. A successful gathering is confidently looked forward to. TARATA. A school committee meeting was lield on Friday 24th. at 8 p.m. Present: Messrs. Crowe, Chamney, Corkill, Fongere, Convey and Wilson (chairman). Regret was expressed by all present that Mr. Day had been appointed to another school, as he has done very good work here since his arrival. The chairman was instructed to give him a warm letter of appreciation. After some routine business had been enacted the following resolution was carried unanimously: "That this committee resigns in a body as a protest against the highhanded action of the Education Department adopted in appointing a teacher to the Tarata School against the wishes of tho committee." A hearty vote of thanks was then given to the chairman for the interest he has taken in school affairs since, he has been in office. WAREA. Our local blacksmith, Mr. W. B. Clarke, has been for some time on the 1 sick list. I am pleased to say that he is now able to get about again, and left last week for a trip to Rotorun, 1 where he will spend about a month. The hot, dry spell still continues, and the milk supply is still on the decrease at the local factory. Rain is badly needed. All creeks and swamps are dry, and the rivers arc getting very low. Mr. W. B. Clarke had the misfortune 1 to loose his troop horse lately. It had got into a neighboring drain and had died there. This makes Mr. Clarke's . second loss, he having lost a valuable animal twelve months ago. A basket social will be held in the ; Puniho schoolroom on Friday night, ' 31st inst., in aid of the school improve- [ ment funds. On Wednesday night several earthquakes were felt here. It is rumored that Mr. Alex. Alexander will be cutting up his farm of two thousand acres shortly. The ladies' hall committee have decided to hold a bazaar on or about the 7th and Bth of June.
