A SWIMMER SEVERELY BITTEN. Wellington, Monday. Beware of fresh-water eels. There is a common belief that the eel is a hairmless denizen of our streams, but a recent incident '. lias rather exploded that theory. The other day, Mr. J. F. He had been swimming for a few minutes in deep water, when a slimy thing passed over one of bis legs. He at once made for the bank, but had only proceeded a. few yards when he felt the teeth of the eel fasten ha the flesh behind the left knee. He struggled gamely, and at length succeeded in kicking off the eel with his right foot, and reaching the bank. The shape of the eel's jaw as outlined by the teeth marks still showed red and inflamed when shown to a reporter on Saturday. The episode is also Touched for by Mr. A. Eglinton, who was in company with Mr. Wallis.
