LAW AND SERVICE TO PLAY OFF, On Saturday the final matches in the third round of the Saturday competition were decided. Law won by default against Inglewood, and as a result are now level with United Service at the head of the list, and a play-off will he necessary to decide the championship. The date of meeting has not yet been decided. Considerable interest is attached to the match, and there is sure to be a large attendance at the Recreation Grounds. A suggestion has been made that a small charge, say of 6d, should be made on this occasion, and it is certain that 110 one who has followed the course of events through the three rounds of the competition, and witnessed many interesting contests absolutely free of charge, would quibble at the proposal. New Plymouth had a very easy win over Egmont Village. NEW PLYMOUTH v. EGMONT VILLAGE. The above-named teams met on the Sports Ground, and the country team suffered defeat by 144 runs on the first innings. New Plymouth batted first, and, despite a bad start, the first three wickets falling for 18, and six being down for 60, the score reached 160 before the last wicket fell. Whittle, going insixh wicket, played a splendid aggressive innings of 96 (not out), in which he gave only one chance, and that one when he was in the eighties. He was very severe on O'Byrne, scoring 17 off one over, including a sixer. He had bad luck in not reaching the century. Goddard (19) was the only other inan to reach double figures. Green (7) and Trebilcoe (!)) held up their wickets while Whittle did the scoring, the last wicket putting on over thirty runs. O'Byrne was easily the Lest bowler for Village, capturing eight wickets for 73, seven of which were clean bowled. At one time his average stood at four for 12. The Village team made a very poor stand in their first venture, and only compiled 22 runs. Goddard bowled splendidly, and captured seven wiekets for eight, while McLaren got three for nine. O'Byrne carried his | bat right through the innings for ten. In the follow-on Village did much better, and when time was up had lost five wickats for 56. Scores:— NEW PLYMOUTH.

Law won this match by default, as Tnglewood was unable to send in a team to Xew Plymouth on Saturday, and accordingly forfeited. SATURDAY v. THURSDAY. A match between elevens representing the clubs in "the Thursday and the Saturday competitions respectively will be played on the Sports Ground on Thursday. Thursday players who have played in the Saturday competition on three Saturdays will be considered Saturday players. SCHOOL MATCH. On Friday a match will be played on the Recreation Ground* between a team chosen from the High School A and Ji elevens and one chosen by Mr. Bowles from the remaining teams in the schools competition, viz., West End, Central, and Scouts. ■ I
