POLICE COURT

NEW PLYMOUTH, MARCH 23. A sitting of the Police Court was held yesterday morning before Mr. 11. S Fit?hcrbert, S.lf. DRUNKENNESS. A first offender was convicted and discharged. BREACH OF PROHIBITION ORDER. Joseph Moodie, who did not appear, but was represented by Mr. A. 11. Johnstone, who pleaded guilty on his behalf, was lined 10s and costs 7s for procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibit tion order. THE BLACKBERRY PEST. John Charles Oliver pleaded guilty to a. charge of having failed to clear certain noxious weeds, viz., blackberry, from i his sections in the Pari tutu survey district. Mr. I'airfax-Cholmely prosecuted. Defendant explained that "he had held the farm as a leasehold for 11 years and had always cleared it of weeds. Although still in occupation, he had given up all interest in the place, which had been put up for auction, and he might lave to go out at any moment. In any case, he would be leaving the farm next week. The Inspector said the piece of land was very bad with blackberry, and the neighbors of the surrounding land, which was clear, objected to this source, from j which the pest could spread, being in their midst. His Worship said that in those cases his custom was to inflict fines of from £2 to £3, hut, considering the circumstances mentioned by defendant, he would inflict a Jine of only £ 1 and costs 7s. TRUANCY CASES. Mr. A. Hooker, Truant Inspector of the Taranaki Education Board, brought forward a number of cases against parents for having failed to send their children to school every day as required by the Act. Mrs. Gilbanks, Mrs. Mitchell, Wm. Powley and Frank Scrivener, who appeared and pleaded guilty, were fined 2s, without costs. Geo. Knight, who failed to appear, was fined as and costs
