Nicoll with a writ claiming £5Ol damages for alleged libel in a letter signed "Ratepayer" which appeared in the Guardian last month. THE DIVORCE COURT. Wellington, Thursday. To-day the Chief Justice granted a decree nisi in the case Ernest Henry Livermore v. Sarah Livermore, husband's petition on the ground of misconduct. A WALKING MATCH. Feilding, Thursday. A 45-mile walking-match took place yesterday, the contestants being Woollatt and Beaumont, two drapers' assistants. Woollatt completed the course in 8 hours 31 minutes; Beaumont did not finish. MR. MALCOLM'S CAMPAIGN. Feilding, Thursday. Mr. Malcolm, M.P., gave a, lecture here last night on Imperial Federation. He had a cordial reception, and a motion was carried that it was u.niust that the whole burden of guarding "the Empire should fall on the United Kingdom; that the overseas dominions should share it on an equitable basis; that the dominions should be given a, share of the control of defence expenditure and the foreign policy of the Empire. The meeting therefore welcomes the idea of Imperial Federation, and considers the matter demands the prompt action of Parliament and of the country. GISBORNE HARBOR. Gisborne, Thursday. The Harbor Board yesterday conferred with Mr. Holmes, Engineer-in-Chief, with regard to coping with the range at the entrance to the river and harbor, and his suggestions met with general approval. Further details are to be obtained. Mr. Holmes also had a conference with the Mayor and borough en'gineer regarding differences of opinion on municipal engineering matters on which it was agreed to accept Mr. Holmeß' decision, and an amicable agreement has been arrivod at. YOUNG MAN'S PITIABLE STATE. Gisborne, Thursday. A youn£ man, apparently suffering from the effects of alcohol, was remanded to-day for curative treatment. He was in a pitiable state, and was stated to have. been wandering about Whareongaonga for two days in a nude condition and foodless, j BURGLARIES IN WELLINGTON, j Wellington, Thursday. ] Ihe residences of W. C. Gasquoine and Philip Nathan near the Basilica,' were entered by burglars some time between 2 and 4 ofclock this morning. An entrance was obtained through windows which had not been securely fastened. Cash totalling £7 10s and a large quantity of.silverware and other goods were taken from the houses.
