THE WAITARA REGATTA

A DECIDED SUCCESS. The Waitara regatta was held yesterday at the river township, and 1 proved a decided success. The weather in the early part of the day was warm and sultry, but a heavy shower in the afternoon had a beneficial effect in cooling the atmosphere, although its temporary effect was to drive one and all to seek shelter. There was a very good attendance, the takings being £49 lis, about ,€8 better than last year, wheir the function was held on New Year's Day. The surrounding districts poured in their inhabitants by every .available means. Excellent train arrangements had been made, and these were taken advantage of pretty freely by people from lnglewood and the south. The New Plymouth people, however, did not patronise their trains too well. This is rather surprising, as the Waitara regatta is the only water carnival held in Taranaki. Only the three local clubs competed in the events. The Mokau Club, which used to send a crew, is evidently dormant or defunct. The rowing was excellent, and each event was keenly contested. There was a healthy rivalry, every crew desiring to be the first to catch the judge's eye. Clifton were the most successful, securing prize money amounting to £3O 10s/ Tikorangi obtained £l9, and Waitara £o. All the arrangements were perfect, the events being got off well to time, and there being absolutely no unpleasantness or mishaps to mar the day's pleasure. One protest was entered in reference to the dinghy race. The starters, Messrs. R. Tate and Telfar, knew their busings, and did it. The decisions of the judges, Messrs. Piggott and Ilicks, were never questioned, Messrs. Klenner and E. Knight had charge of the greasy boom and tub races, events that added much to the merriment. Messrs. Spurdle and Buchanan, as joint secretaries, werei most assiduous in their attention to their duties, and supplied the oil that caused every wheel to run smoothly. The Waitara Brass Band, under Bandmaster O'Connell, supplied a programme of music that was a treat to listen to. Several launches that were plying between the wharf and the heads did excellent business. It is expected that a profit will be cleared over the meeting. Results:— Boys' whalehoat race, for hoys under 18 years, one mile; first prize .£3, second prize £l.—Clifton Rowing Club (Xo. 1 crew), R. Lawrence (stroke), Taylor, W. Mortensen, J. Manu,*W.
