SLY-GROGGER HEAVILY FINED. By Telegiaph. —Press Association. Auckland, Yesterday. At the Police Court, Jean Carter, proprietress of the Mansions, one of the largest boarding-houses in Auckland, was charged on two informations with having sold liquor without a lict nse. It was admitted that boarders were supplied with liquor by Mrs. Ca: ter, for which they paid cash. Two constables were so supplied. This was followed by a police raid, when 1!)5 bottles of beer and stout, and a quan'.i';v of wine were found on the premises. It was admitted that the proprietress was a respectable woman, and the house vi;'l conducted. It was pleaded that tlier; were none of the usual elements of sly grog selling, but Mr. Cuttcn, S.M., l\:ld that there had been a verv palpable breach of the law, and imposed the maximum penalty of £SO 011 one charge, and dismissed the second ciiarge. He ordered the liquor seized to be destroyed.
