WAITARA NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent)

The Borough Council yesterday paid over to their solicitor's, Messrs. Boy and .Nicholson, a cheque to be transmitted to the Spiral Steel Pipe Co. of £18,120 l(is Bd, in payment for work and interest in connection with the waterworks. The Harbor Board has handled over 7000 bales of wool this season, a record for the port, being some 1000 in advance of last season.

Visits of Home liners keep up well. On Sunday morning early the Sussex sailed, and an hour or two afterwards the Orari anchored.

The Regatta committee will hold the usual dance on Thursday evening in St. John's Hall. WAITARA REGATTA.

This event takes place to-morrow, and as usual will doubtless be well patronised. Judging by the animated appearance of the river every evening, the clubs intend that the competitors will be in good form. The training operations have now been extended to day work, and at almost any hour crews may be seen on the river. A great deal of interest is centred in the champion and ladies' races, and the former promises to be one of the best foughtout events for many years. The verdict lies between Tikorangi and Clifton, both crews being very confident that they can just about win. The race will be well worth seeing. Ladies' races for the past few years have not eventuated, but to-morrow your readers will see a very interesting one. All other events will bring forth keen competition, and a good day's sport will result. Suitable train arrangements have been made. Visitors from New Plymouth may go down by the 12 o'clock train and see all the events, or by the 12.50 train and miss two of the minor ones. There will be no delays between races, and the programme will be through by five o'clock. Trains return to New Plymouth and for south at 5.40, and those desirous of staying later can catch the 0.35 to New Plymouth. A dance is being held in St. John's Hall in the evening.
