DEPUTATIONS TO A MINISTER. > By Telegraph.—Press Association. j Gisborne, Tuesday, i A deputation of about fifty settlers met the Hon. R. Mackenzie at Tolago Ua,v last night and the requirements of the district were brought under his notice. As to Tolago Bay bridge, the Minister said a Government subsidy s' ould liave been obtained before its \ ration, but as the work had been completed the Auditor-General would not now pass the item if a subsidy were granted. The rating area should be extended, bringing Waiapu and Gisborne in if necessary. In regard to land for settlement, a great demand existed throughout the country; the difficulty was that where Government signified their intention of acquiring land compulsorily the owners raised the price to such an extent that Government could not let it to settlers at a reasonable rental. Government had therefore to pay through the nose for every cere thus acquired. He advised them to take advantage of the Land for Settlement Finances Act. The Government van taking estates wherever they ec uld find them at a reasonable price. Mr. Mac Donald, M.P., referring to the Land for Settlement Finances Act, said that no measure which had ever been put on the statute book gave a ir.an of small means a better chance to t'( t on the land. The party proceeded to Tokoin*,ru today. The meeting of settlers at Tolago Bay urged that the Harbor Board in again leasing the Taniwharenarai block should cut it up into small holdings instead of only six sections, so as to prevent aggregation. Mr. Mac Donald said he would try to get a special meeting of the board to consider the subject.
