ARNST BEATEN
IX THE PARRAMATTA HUNDRED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Received 19, 5 p.m. Sydney, March 18. For (lie Paramatta Hundred the weather was fine, with a rising tide. Results:— First heat: Ripley (83sec) 1, Tlieo. Towns NSsec) 2, Day (18sec) 8. Ripley was never overhauled, and won a good race by a length. Second heat: Norman Towns (44sec) 1, W. West (78sec) 2, McLean (75sec) 3. Towns gradually forged through, and won by two lengths. A great finish I amongst the other placed" men, J. Arnst pushing McLean hard for third place. Third heat: Hagney (18sec) 1, Simpson (70scc) 2, Paddon (45sec) 3. The presence of Arnst and other cracks, including Messenger, gave additional interest to this heat. Hagney had a good start, and overhauled the limit man at Tennyson, Lawson (60sec) lying fourth. Arnst, who was on scratch, with Messenger (32sec) were together, well at the rear. At Carbarita Arnst retired, despite many requests to finish the course. Hagney, finishing well, won by four lengths. Lawson was fourth, and Messenger in the ruck. Fourth heat: Fogwell (18sec) 1, F. Matterson (not Kemp, 40sec) 2, C. Mat-. terson (75sec) 3. Fogwell steadily made his way, to the front, and took charge. At Tennyson he jumped away, finishing two lengths to the good. Arnst's defeat has robbed the final on Saturday of a good deal of interest.
