SOUTHERN KEFEREES' ASSOCIATION. The annual report of the South Taranaki Referees' Association, whieh held its annual meeting at Hawera on Monday, mentions that its balance-sheet shows a balance of £1 7s 3d on the year's working. The Taranaki Rugby Union is thanked for a donation of £5 15s. The year has been a successful one so far as the working of the association is concerned, the one regrettable incident being the failure of the association to provide a referee for a junior match at Normanby. This season the association will be without the services of two of its Benior referees—Messrs N. A'Court and J. O'Dea—who haveleft the district, but several of ,last year's junior men promise well. The report proceeds:—During the season the association was asked by the Rugby Union to control the matches at Eltham in the northern district, and as the northern association, raised no objection this was done. Your executive strongly recommends that this question be fully considered at the annual meeting. The relations of the Southern Association with the Northern Association have ever been of the most friendly nature, and the executive considers that no encroachment should be made on the territory of either association without a very strong reason. It is doubtful whether this strong reason existed last season. Your executive also recommends that the association exercise its rights this year of sending a delegate to the annual meeting of the Taranaki Rugby Union. The executive feels that the standard of football in the district depends to a very large extent on the personality of the referees controlling the game.
