Mr. Hughes, advocating the need for the powers asked in the referenda, said that when he assumed office he found thirty-three combines which had cornered the market, and were acting otherwise than for the benefit of the public. The Government wanted power to sit on the trusts whenever it saw them. Mr. Hughes made a bitter attack on Mr. Ilolman for his lukewarm attitude on the referenda. Perth, March 17. The Premier declared that the carrying of the referenda, would so cripple activities and development that it would bring disaster to the State.
