AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY

COMMITTEE MEETING. |

The General Committee of the Tara- , naki Agricultural Society met at the secretary's office on Tuesday night. Mr. W. Ambury (president) occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance of members. The chairman said this was the first meeting of the committee since Mr. Cliff was appointed secretary. He extended to him the congratulations of the society on his appointment, and welcomed him as an official. He hoped that his connection with the society would be thoroughly successful in every shape and form, and that under his guidance and work the society would be still more successful in the future than it had been in the past. They had known Mr. Cliff as a committeeman for a good number of years, and in that capacity he had done good and now in his position as secretary a tremendous amount of the success, of the society.depended upon his efforts. Knowing his enthusiasm and practical and sound judgment in connection with the committee work, they looked forward to a thoroughly successful time for the society under his management. He felt satisfied that he would have the hearty co-operation of the committee from time to time, for, as Mr. Cliff knew, they were a band of men who were all anxious to do their best in the interests of the society.

The secretary briefly replied. An,apology was received from Mr. W, Stanley, who enclosed the names of two new members.

The chairman mentioned that, since his appointment, the secretary had been canvassing for new members, and to date had succeeded in securing 242 new members.

It was resolved to procure necessary furniture for the new club room. A discussion ensued with reference to the disposal of sections comprising 'S>t. Germain's Square. Mr. Stanley Smith expressed the opinion that the time was not yet ripe for the sale of sections, and suggested that it be deferred for six months. It was fell, however, that the matter had now gone too far, and it was decided to contiuue with the sale as advertised.

Correspondence was read with reference to the next winter show, and the meeting proceeded to discuss the question of show dates. It was eventually resolved as follows: "That the show be held on June 7, 8, 9, and 10."

It was resolved that the General Committee, with power to add to its number, constitute the Winter Show Committee'. Messrs. G. Tisch, Hal. Goodacre, F. Bellringer, C. Carter, W. Stanley, junv'SC Brooks, and Eustace were appointed members of the committee.

Regarding the produce classes,','Mr; Wood mentioned that the judge at 'the last spring show had stated that judges could easily judge between salted and saltless butters, and ho therefore recommended that the conditions be amended. —lt was resolved to communicate with the judge on the matter. A committee consisting of the president and Messrs. H. King, J. S. Connett, E. Griffiths, and A. W. Woods, was appointed to go into tlie conditions of the butter and cheese classes.

It was suggested that at future shows a special class be included in the schedule in which factory managers would be allowed to select their own butter for competition.

A committee, consisting of the chairman and Messrs. Jackson, Brown, Olivers, and Wood, was appointed to go into the question of necessary accommodation for the winter show.

Several matters with reference to the closing of the street alongside the Drill Hall were referred to the chairman and secretary.

Messrs. Ambury, Griffiths, Carter, Brown, Watson, H. King, G. V. Tate, Woods, and A. T. Moore were appointed a Schedule Committee. The first meeting of the committee will be held on Tuesday next. Messrs. Stanley Smith, J. R. Hill, L. Jackson, and J. S. Connett were appointed a committee to canvass for special prizes.

Mr. Wood gave notice to move that the annual meetings of the society take place in the last week in July or the first week in August. Accounts amounting to £33 were passed for payment. The secretary was instructed to arrange with Captain Young, of the Agricultural Department', to give a series of lectures dur.ing the coming winter months.

It was mentioned that all machinery firms had decided not to have working exhibits at any of the winter shows in the Dominion for the ensuing twelve months.

It was reported that Mr. Wheatley, of Lepperton, had offered a special prize of £5 5s to the Agricultural Society for the best lady rider, over eighteen years of age, on side-saddle at the next spring show, open only to ladies who have never won a prize in a riding competition.
