ROYAL LIFE SAVING SOCIETY

LOCAL EXAMINATIONS. Since the visit of Mr. Tl. M. Payne, president of I he Waiignnui centre of the Royal Life-Saving Society of New Zealand, to New Plymouth, keen interest has been taken in this useful branch of the natatorial art. No one was more anxious to become proficient than Mr. V. (I. Morris, the popular custodian of the Municipal Hat lis. 'and with this object he determined to try and secure an honorary instructor's certilieate. In order to obtain I his lie had not only to show that he was thoroughly at home in the water, and cognisant of the latest and most up-to-date methods of lifesaving and resuscitation, but also that he was capable of imparting that knowledge to others. And in order to satisfy the examiner on this point, he had to iißtrnct a sipiad of at least four swimmers, the majority of whom must pass a severe examination. Mr. Morris' squad was composed of Misses E. Tipladv. E Johnson, E. White, and Joyce Hompton! all of whom passed the examination set by .Messrs. W. Lints and E. Pfankuch. the examiners, who considered their work in the water the best they had ever witnessed. Mr. Morris will receive his certificate as honorary instructor, and the members of his squad will each receive a bronze medallion.

Mr. Lints has received word from the Wangaimi centre to examine two further classes.
