Dr. Ewart lies seriously ill at kit home in Upper Willis street. Mr. George Tatton, of Auckland, «n old resident of Taranaki, is visiting New Plymouth. Br. W. H. Hosking, of Mastcrton, has left on a visit to his son, who resides in Rarotonga. The Ven. Archdeacon Walsh leaves New Zealand shortly on a 18-months' trip to the Old Country. Mr. J. R. Hill has u«eu re-appointed a member of the committee of the Taranaki Agricultural Society. Mr. J. Dingle, Mr. and Mrs. George Newman were amongst the passenger* per s.s. Rarawa last night for Auckland. The Rev. T. H. Sprott, vicar of St. Paul's, Wellington, signified yesterday his acceptance of the Bishopric of Wellington. • Mr. W. Ambury, president, has been appointed representative of the Taranaki Agricultural Society on the jTcchnical School Committee. The death occurred on Tuesday of one of Wanganui's most respected citizens, in the person of Mr. T. W. Blennerhassctt, J.P., for twenty years manager of Hallenstcin Bros.' Wanganui branch. From seventy-eight applicants for tho position of town clerk and engineer to the borough of Mastcrton, Mr. Jamea Archer, of Napier, and formerly of Auckland, has been appointed' to the position.—Press telegram. The death occurred on Tuesday morning at Greytown of Mr. John Judd, sen, a well-known Wairarapa farmer, and s member of a family of pioneer descent, known throughout the province. Deceased was 77 years of age. ■ Miss AValford, Principal of the Church' Missionary Society's Tucker College and Training School, South India, who in. visiting New Zealand, arrived in New Plymouth yesterday on a visit to her sister, Mrs. S. D, Pope. Miss Walford will remaia in New Plymouth for several weeks. The death occurred «t Marton on Tuesday of Mr. H. E. Rawson, well known for many years as a resident of the Upper Hutt district. Mr. Rawson engaged in farming pursuits for some 25 years at the Upper Hutt, and afterwards went to Perth, Western Australia, but returned to the Dominion a year or i two ago, and took up his residence at I Marton. Mr. Robert McNab, formerly a Minister of the Crown, yesterday intimated hia acceptance of the requisition of the> 1 Progressive Liberal League to stand for Palmerston North in the Government interests. The reply had bfifen delayed by the illness of Mr. McNab during the past fortnight, from which he has now recovered, says a telegram from Palmerston North. Master Stan. Hurle, an ex-High School boy, who is now in the Labor Department Office, Wellington, was very successful at the Department's annual picnic, which was held last week. He won the Departmental running championship, the tennis championship, was third in the swimming championship, and was also a member of the team that won the relay race.
The Hon. J. Carroll, Acting-Primo Minister, is to visit Parihaka on Saturday, where he will attend a meeting of Maoris to discuss, among other matterse the postion of the native leases under the West Coast Settlement lieserves Act. He was expected to leave Wellington yesterday, visiting some native settlements en. roufe. It is understood that the Acting-Premier wlil motor through from Waitotara via Hawera and Opunake.
The leader of the Opposition goes south next week. He will (says tho New Zealand Herald) address public meetings at Kaiapoi, Nelson, and passing through Chri9tehurch will go on to Central Otago, where Mr. .lames Allen, M.P., will meet him, also Mr. Hcrdman, M.P. Public addresses will be given in Central Otago and Southland. Mr. Herrics, M.P., will speak at Ilokitika, and possibly other centres on the West Coast. Later on Mr. Masscy will speak at Wellington, and about the end of May he will address a public meeting in Auckland.
