After being postponed for two weeks owing to rain, the Saturday competition advanced a stage further on Saturday last, when the matches were resumed in perfect weather. At the Recreation Grounds. Civil Service had an easy win over New Plymouth, whose chances of winning the contest this season have now departed, At Egmont Village the local team was defeated by Law. There is now every possibility of Law and United Service having to play off for the championship. l NEW PLYMOUTH v. UNITED ' SERVICE. This match attracted considerable interest, and a good attendance at the Recreation grounds on Saturday. New Plymouth opened the batting with Weston and McLaren, to the bowling ol Bain and Dinniss. With the score at four, McLaren tipped his first ball back to Dinniss, who held it. Bury, who followed, quickly hit up 18 (including three fours) before lie vjas caught by Napier off Bain. Goddard followed, and with the score at 44, was bowled. The other wickets fell quickly, Weston, who was batting exceedingly well, being the only one to shape to the bowling, and seven wickets were down for 06. Whittle and Quilliam with a useful seven each, the latter not out, assisted Weston to bring the total to 97, and his own score tc 44, before he was unfortunately run out, His innings was the only thing that saved his team from making a lamentable display. One run later the end came, the innings closing for 98. Bain and Mackay commenced operations to Whittle and McLaren. The former proved expensive, 17 being hit oft first three overs. Both batsmen were using great judgment in running between the wickets, and the scoring board signalled" 2S —lfl—l, when Mackay was - dismissed by Williams, who had replaced Whittle. Bowles filled the vacancy. and despite numerous changes ir the bawling department runs came rapidly, both batsmen forcing the paee, and the winning Jlit came without any separation. A few runs later, with the score at 102. Bain was nicely caught ofl Goddard by Stohr. whose smart fieldinf had saved a number of boundaries. Os borne and Ingram were dismissed without scoring.
