A BIG MAORI GATHERING

IN THE WAIRARAPA. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Masterton, Last Night. One of the largest gatherings of Maoris ever held in the Wairarapa is to be held at Papawai this month, commencing on the 25th. It is anticipated that over 4000 will be present, including Maoris from all parts of the Dominion. Invitations have been sent to King George of Tonga, and to leading Hawaiian natives. The objects of the gathering are the unveiling of a memorial to Tamatau Mahaupuku, an influential Maori who died here some years ago, and to discuss the welfare of the Maori race generally, and particularly the younger generation. His Excellency the Governor has signified his intention of being present at the unveiling of the memorial.
