BOROUGH COUNCIL
OFFICIAL REPORTS. The following reports will be submitted to the usual monthly meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council to be held this evening: ELECTRICAL ENCINKER'S REPORT. Mr. Black reports:— Extensions. —As directed by the council, the chairman of the Electric Light Committee and I perused the sketch I plan of new forebay submitted by Mr. Cliinie, and as some alterations were required, wired Mr. Climie and he arrived by Wednesday evening's mail train. All the desired alterations were discussed the same evening. On Friday I went out to the power-house, got some particulars of positions of pipe lines, etc., made a plan of proposed forebay showing positions of these lines of pipes, and on February 22 forwarded two tracings to of same to Mr. Climie. As no reply had been received I wrote again on the Oth inst., and yesterday (Bth) received a wire from Mr. Climie from Hastings regretting that plan would not be here for committee meeting and promising to finish as early as possible. Temporary Plant.—Some replies have been received to enquiries for temporary plant, but so far there is no word of any machine of any sort. I am making further enquiries. BOROUGH ENGINEER'S REPORT. Mr. Kendall report*-..-Streets. —The metalling of St. Aubyn street is proceeding. Morley street: I beg to submit herewith plans of the proposed permanent levels of Morley street from the Western Park gate to Wallace Place. Assistant.—ln accordance with you! council's instructions and indications to employ Mr. Skitrop as assistant for a month on trial at 10s per day, I beg to report that I saw Mr. Skitrop at once and he promised to come for a month only at £3 per week, but said that ii he was appointed permanently he could not see his way to some for less remuneration than £3 12s per week. Mr. Skitrop has now been in the employ ot your council for nearly a fortnight, and since the authority was given I have had more than sufficient opportunities for seeing that Mr. Skitrop is a verv superior man, and the right man in the right place, and I would strongly recommend your council to'give him what he asks, as I feel sure that he will at all times be found willing and able to give valuable assistance j both in and out of the office,-and'it would be most difficult to find a man of equal ability. I think it is most fortunate for your council that Mr. Skitrop is available. Waterworks.—Gill street main: The connection of the main.in Curric street with the one in St. Aubyn street has been made. Unfortunately one of the workmen during the progress of this job happened an accident by falling ana bruising his head. He now lies in the hospital, but his conditions is improving steadly. j VVaterworks, Mangorei.—The water-' works 'caretaker reports that the river was in flood for about 24 hours on the 20th ult., and gave him some trouble at the pipe heauj, but the river is iriuch' cleaner since. 1 tie also reports that he visited the old waterworks on the 2nd. inst., and lound everything the same as lie luat reported. Old WaterworKs.—lu connection with the old waterworks and in accordance with your instructions, i have to report that i visited the old works recently, and found that there is a good deal of gorse. existing upon the leased portions, although many of the blackberries have been ciit, auu owing to the race now being enipty since the dam broke away, cattie have been in the portion of the reserve which lies between the river and the race/ also owing to the poor fence existing around the„portion which has been reserved on the higher levels cattle have had access thereto. Abattoir.—Painting and whitewashing. Tenders have been invited for this work. Annual Supplies.—Tenders have also been invited lor these. Sewers.—l beg to submit specifications for the supplies of pipes required for sewer extensions. ELECTRIC LIGHT COMMITTEE. That the East End Bathing shed com-' mittee be informed that the Council cannot see its way to grant free light for the bathing shed. WORKS COMMITTEE. The borough engineer was instructed to submit plans ox the proposed permanent levels of Morley street irom Western Park gate to Wallace Place. That (Mr. Dempsey be informed that the council will supply the necessary water lor the proposed swimming baths at the Central Scnool, the charge to be by meter at !)d per 1000 gallons, the Education Board to guarantee payment of all charges including cosl ot meter. That the council having agreed that no connection would be made to the water main to the Old People's Home without the consent of the Hospital Board, Mr. J. D. Sole be informed upon such consent being given his application for water supply at VVestown wul be considered. That the Park Tennis Club be charged £1 10s per annum for i water lor their lawns. Inat Mr. N. T. Maunder be informed that the councii cannot .see its way at present to do any metalling in Vivian .street west. That the explanation given by the custodian of the baths, as to why certain ladies weie refused admission to the baths on an evening when the baths were in use by other ladies, be accepted, That the council for inclusion in the agreement with reference to the bridge over the lienui river on the Avenue road be approved subject to the inclusion in the lists of the Waiwakaiho bridge on the Junction road, near Egmont Village, and that subject as above the draft agreement submitted by the county solicitors be also approved. That the action of Ilis Worship the Mayor in granting permission to Mr. S. Hooker to supervise the tarring of the High School tennis court be confirmed. That the application of the borough turncock for an increase of salary be referred to the borough engineer to report upon on Monday evening. That the abbattoir slaughtermen be paid Is per pig for all pigs slaughtered for export, such fees to be apportioned amongst the men by' the abattoir manager. That consideration of the proposed permanent levels of Morley street he deferred until the Works Committee have an opportunity of going over the ground with the Western Park Board. That the recommendation of the borough engineer to employ Mr. Skitrop as assistant at £3 12s per week be given pfipet to, the engagement to be subject to one month's notice by either party.—That the following tendeis, being the lowest in each instance,! be accepted:—Contract No. 58, abattoiri
