' A good deal of time was taken up at •the last Patear Harbor Board meeting over the question of dredging -away the sand, or mud bsink inside the bar, which has greatly interfered with shipping of late. The secretary repotted that, as instructed, he had communicated with several boards and firm? < on. the matter, amongst others the Waitara Board, which replied it had no dredge for sale or hire, and the New Plymouth Board, which stated the "Thomas King" was not available. The Napier Board suggested communicating with the firm of Niven and Co., and he did so. The firm replied stating they could supply a 12in suction dredge mounted on a wooden punt, without propelling machinery, but fitted with a steam winch to enable her to move from place to place, at a cost of £'2500. A dredge of this size would have a maximum capacity of 200 yards of- sand per hour, but owing to stoppages this would have to 'be largely discounted. The firm judged that taking year in and year out the dredge could put through 100,000 yards annually, working one shift. The dredge would be suitable for discharging over a breastwork into a reclamation area. Messrs Niven suggested the B,oard should send someone to Napier to investigate, and accordingly a committee' of the Board .was appointed to go into the matter.

The proposed excursion to the Marlborough Sounds at Easter has been abandoned by the Union Company, as it will then have no suitable steamer available. OVERSEA VESSELS. FOR NEW PLYMOUTH.
