GROG IN NO-LICENSE AREA. By Telegraph.— Preis Association. Gore, Last Night. James Hamilton was convicted and fined £SO for keeping liquor for sale in a no-license district.
THE FAR NORTH. Dargaville, Last Night. Two representatives of the Union S.B. Co. recently visited the Northern VVairoa, with the object of ascertaining the depth of water at the various timber wharves, and the quantity of timber likely to be carried during the current year. It is stated that some large timber orders for overseas are coming to hand, a-nd heavy shipments are likely to be made in the near future. SUED FOR PRIZE-MONEY. Dunedin, Last Night. In the S.M. Court this morning, Mr. Widdowson, S.M., gave judgment in the i case in which Miss Aileen Moore, the successful competitor in the chief pianoforte contest at the recent competitions, sought to recover from the Competitions Society the sum of £5 ss. Plaintiff j claimed that she compiled with all the conditions ( of the society, which after she was adjudged the winner, refused to pay her the prize money. For the defence it was claimed that she had failed to comply with a clause in the genera] conditions, and under the power contained therein the committee had forfeited her prize money. Judgment was given for plaintiff with costs, and leave to appeal was refused. REGISTRATION OF BARMAIDS. Wellington, Last Night. Regulations under the Workers Dwellings Act and the regulations concerning the registration of barmaids under the Licensing Amendment Act of last year are gazottcd to-night. Applications for registration as barmaids must be sentf to the Secretary of Labor by June Ist, 1011.
