FIRES.

A DWELLING DESTROYED. By PrcM AstMiatUn. Christchurch, Last Night. A dwelling, house in Retreat road Avondalc, owned by C. 11. Williams, was totally destroyed by fire. The building being outside the city limits, the service of the fire brigade was not requisitioned. The place had been untenanted for some time. Williams was, it is stated, in the North Island, whilst his wife was staying at New Brighton. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. Both the building and its contents were insured in the Alliance Office for £7OO. DESTRUCTIVE OUTBREAK AT STRATFORD. About 4 o'clock on Sunday morning Messrs. Derby Bros.' sash and door factory, in Cloton road, was burned down. The Fire Brigade, which was quickly on the scone, succeeded in saving the house, in which Mr. George Derby lives, and a considerable amount of timber stacked in the yards, but the factory, together with all its contents—a large quantity of stock and machinery—and a Courtland waggon, which was standing in front of the building, were totally destroyed.

The building destroyed was the property of Derby Bros., and was valued (with machinery) at £I2OO. In addition to this there was about £3OO or £4OO worth of stock in the building, and only a portion of the stock in the yards was saved. So far as can be ascertained, the only insurance is £OOO on the building and machinery, in the Hun office, and consequently Messrs. Derby Bros, are very heavy losers. The cause of the fire is quite unknown.—Post.

If your property y not insured call at or ring up the United Insurance Com panv, Ltd.. Devon-street. Telephone 108 Webster Bros., district agents. Insur ances effected on the most favorable terms.—Advt.
