STATE-ACQUIRED LAXD. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Xight. The Government has acquired between 2000 and 3000 acres of freehold, and about 50,000 acres of the Mount Peel estate, in South Canterbury, from the trustees of the late Hon. J. B. Ackland. Host of the country acquired is very safe, is free from snow, and is reported to be eminently suited for subdivision into small grazing runs. Mt. Peel is the, first hill country run acquired in Canterbury, and has been in possession of the Ackland family since 1858. It is anticipated that the portion acquired by the Government will be open for selection in February 1012. It was in the vicinity of Mt. Peel station that Samuel Butler is understood to have written his work, ''Erewhon," and Butler's creek, named after the author, runs through a portion of the area acquired by the Government.
A SHOP BURGLARISED. Christchurch, Saturday Night. A small shop, occupied by Mr. H. Upjohn, tobacconist arid hairdresser, was burglariously entered last night, and a quantity of goods taken. Upjohn left the premises about 8.30 on Friday night, and the theft was not discovered until he opened his shop at the usual hour this morning. The premises wore a very disordered condition, the shelves and cases having been ransacked and very largely dispossessed of their contents. The eashbox and till were not interfered with, but the thief annexed the previous day's saloon takings, about 30s, which had been left in the.saloon. Upjohn estimates his total loss at about £4O.
LOCAL OPTION POLLS. Wellington, Yesterday. Mr. Wright, M.P., has sent the following telegram to the president of the Methodist Conference, Christchurch:— ''Press Association reports Mr. Isitt as stating that the Government had offered to stake its existence on a 55 per cent, majority, but the Temperance Party declined. Temperance leaders here know nothing about such an offer. Surelv a further explanation is necessary-"
