ALLEGED WIFE DESERTION

THE WILKES CASE FURTHER ADJOURNED. Walter Wilkes, solicitor, of Waitara, was again before the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, on the charge of intending to fail to provide his wife with ! adequate maintenance, on which he was remanded from Tuesday afternoon. I When that case was called, defendant ' stated that as no settlement had been arrived at he asked for a further adjournment until next Monday morning, j I This adjournment was absolutely necessary for him, as he wanted to bring wit- j ! nesses from Ashburton and Blenheim,] and probably one from Wellington also, j He understood that counsel for the com- ] ' plainant had no objection to such an adjournment. Mr. Johnstone, who is acting for Mrs. Wilkes, replied that he would offer no objection so long as Wilkes could satisfy the court that the time asked for was the least time in which he could get his witnesses Jiere. Defendant said that it was absolutely the shortest time in which he could prepare his case, and he had a case to prepare. Mr. Fitzherbert, S.M., remarked that it was not an unreasonable time if witnesses had to be brought from the South Island. The adjournment asked for was granted accordingly. Defendant, who is under arrest, then applied from release from arrest until Monday, without bail. His Worship: Well, there will have to be some bail, your own recognisance. (To counsel): Have you any objection to that, Mr. Johnstone? You have a say in the matter. After consulting his client, Mr. Johnstone stated that he had no objection. His Worship then fixed bail at accused's own recognisance of £SO only.
