FROZEN MEAT TRADE
HANDLING AND MARKETING IMPROVEMENTS. By Telegraph.—Preaa Association. Wellington, Last Night A conference was held to-day of representatives from committees set up by producers in various parts of the Dominion to further the efforts of the New Zealand committee to improve the handling and marketing of frozen meat in New Zealand and England. The conference affirmed the principle of forming a Producers' Association, with a view of sending a representative to London. A committee was in the meantime set up to make arrangements for a representative to go Home, providing that the necessary guarantee for expenses be given. The Premier is to be asked to interview in London Lord Devonport, chairman of the Port of London Authority, and Mr. Hepburn, chairman of the Smithfield Market Committee, and urge that the suggested improvements in dock accommodation and storage be not lower down the River Thames than the south-west India Dock, and other recommendations of the committee to be carried out as early as possible. The Premier is to be urged to ask the High Commissioner to give the representative sent Hope all the assistance in his power.
The conference decided that a deputation wait upon the Hon. T. Mackepzie, urging the necessary legislation to make the proposed, association Representative of the whole Dominion, 1 -and to discuss ways and means. The conference then proceeded to deal with the details of suggested improvements at this end, the following being a summary of the decisions: That meat should by lifted by means of boxes with a flap door at each end, such as. are used in the Argentine; that'all meat should bear p, ieaden imark attached ;by a wire, so that on the wire being undone the brand would break up; each freezing works having a distinctive covering for meat; that the use of chutes for loading be discontinued; that the system of putting classification marks on meat should be discontinued; that a strong effort should be made to ensure that ships, particularly those of any one line, arrive in London at stated intervals; arid that freezing companies should provide more storage accommodation in order that shipments may be spread over the whole year. The conference adjourned till to-mor-row.
