CANADA AND THE STATES
AMERICAN SENATE'S HOSTILITY. MR, TAFT PRESSES FOR PRONOUNCEMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Received 1, 12.5 a.m. Washington, February 28. An effort was made to show Mr. Taft the hopelessness of calling a new Congressional session by inducing the Senate to take a preliminary vote on the reciprocity proposals, and thus demonstrate the Senate's overwhelming hostility. Mr. Taft, however, is not convinced, and has renewed his determination to call a session, declaring that he must have the Senate's well-considered pronouncement. SIR WILFRID LAURLER'S MAJORITY. Received 1, 12.50 a.m. Ottawa, February 28. The vote on the reciprocity proposals is not expected till the end of the week, and perhaps the week following. The Government is sure of the party's almost unanimous support.
