ALLEGED ILLEGAL PAYMENT
hospital board chairman CHARGED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Ashburton, Friday. The case of Henry Davis, Mayor ot Ashburton, versus Hugo Friedlander, chairman of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, alleging the receipt of alllegedly illegal payments, came before the Magistrate to-day, when the defendant applied for an adjournment till March 10. The plaintiff objected on the grounds that defendant's motive in asking for such adjournment was to hold a special meeting of the Hospital Board and get his actions whitewashed prior to the case being heard. Notice for such meeting had already been issued. The Magistrate stated that no resolution carried at any meeting could whitewash any wrongdoing of which Friedlander might be guilty, and any discussion at a meeting of a public body would be highly indiscreet, and most improper. He granted the adjournment, but only on condition that the matter would not be discussed by the Hospital Board. Defendant's solicitor gave the necessary undertaking,' and the case will accordingly be held on March 10.
