BRASS BAND CHAMPIONSHIP
THE WAXGANUI COLLAPSE. ANNOUNCEMENT FALLS LTKE A THUNDERBOLT. When the results were announced in full by Mr. Short, in his stentorian tones, it was as if a thunderbolt had fallen on the grandstand (says the Manawatu Daily Times). The announcement that "No. 4 is first" produced a general cheer, and as each succeeding number was read out the section affected vociferated its appreciation. The general public, however, gradually grew more silent till five bands had gone past. "Wanganui sixth" received no cheer, only a few blttei laughs here and there amongst the crowd of faces directed at the judge. The crowd hardly realised the position, and utterly failed to comprehend that the champions of so many years could have fallen to the lowest filae'e in the A grade, after the performance they had heard them put up that night. The judge's remarks were:—No. 4 Band (Wellington Harrison)— Allegro vivace G-8: Very distinct start, all going well, and good tempo. Andante sostenuto: Trombone plays good tone; slight slip; good blend. Band showing off good material. Allegro con brio: Capital blend, receiving artistic treatment; capital cornet tone on cadenza; just slight slips Allegretto: Rich significant treatment, un poeo lento especially good. You give proofs of natural ability. Pesante: All deserved praise. Moderate: Very good indeed. Pesante: Very effective. Allegro: Interpretation of this movement proves a high standard of merit. A most agreeable close to the piece was provided by a capital performance. Bravo! No. 1 Hand (Wanganui).—Allegro vivace fi-8: Very precise start; very good nuances. Euphonium might play un poeo lento softer; very fair blend. Pesante: Nice and distinct bit of playing. Moderate: Euphonium might have a better production. Pesante: Good playing h m >, Allegretto: Might receive better distinction. You could make more of the marks of expression. Moderate: Very fair blend, good finish.
