The employers refused the request for a conference, declaring that there was nothing to confer about. Appeals have been made to unions throughout the Commonwealth to support the strikers. THE CENSUS. Leading brickmakers declare that Mr. Griffiths' brickworks scheme is impracticable, and that the proposed selling price of 30s per thousand is impossible without loss. BROKEN HILL MINE. Sydney, February 18. The Broken Hill Proprietary mine, after two years' stoppage, has re-started productive work underground, which will give employment to a large number of, men. BUILDERS' LABORERS' STRIKE. Brisbane, February 18. The secret ballot of the builders' laborers unanimously rejected the masters' proposals for a settlement.

AWKWARD FOR THE CHAUFFEUR. Perth, February 18. The chauffeur in charge of the Ministerial motor took three friends for a ride, and collided with a cart. Two of the friends were badly injured.
