BUSH FIRES
THE WORST PERIOD PAST. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Bush fires are still burning in many districts in the neighborhood of Auckland, and a great deal of smoke still hovers over the city. Reports received, however, point to the fires decreasing, and the worst period appears to have passed. Fires were burning freely along the Main Trunk line to-day. On the Upper Carringtou and Mangorei roads the settlers have lost heavily bv destruction of fences and denudation of pastures. One of Mr. Davies' houses, on Carrington road, and a whare belonging to Mr. Simons' mill, were destroyed, while Messrs. Collins and Bishop had a hard fight to save their places.
