UNCERTIFICATED TEACHERS
TO BE ASSISTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dmiedin, Last Might. At a meeting of the Otago Education Board to-day, Mr. McKinlay moved '•that in order to encourage uncertificated teachers to go forward for examinations, the Board take into consideration the establishment of classes, and instruct the chief inspector to draw up a suitable scheme to be presented to the Board at next meeting." The mover referred to the low salaries received by uncertificated teachers, and to the financial difficulties they encountered in equipping themselves by examination, and he advocated assistance by the Education Department. The chairman (Hon. A. Fergus), in supporting the motion, said too much had been made of the illegitimate inefficiency of uncertificated teachers, and he quoted from a report by ex-Chief Inspector Goyen to show that most of the uncertificated teachers were doing good work. The motion was carried unanimously,
