SWIMMING.
NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. The annual sports of the .New Plymouth Swimming Club at the Municipal Baths on Tuesday night must have been very disappointing to the energetiu officials, who produced a really firstclass programme of an hour and a half's duration. There were very few outside competitors, local swimmers winning everything. During the progress of the racing Messrs. Lints and Pfankuch gave an exhibition of life-saving. The exhibition concluded by some fancy diving, Mr. Lints being seen to advantage in his gymnastic tricks, and Mr. Pfankuch receiving deserved appla,use for his "porpoise" dives. Following are the results: —
50 Yards Maiden.—First heat: A. Bacon, Osec., 1; Briscoe, Usee, 2. Five others competed. Second heat: S. Okey, Usee, 1; D. Howden, 9sec., 2. C. Fairbrother, A. C. Maxwell and Cotterill also swam. Final: A. Bacon 1, S. Okey 2. Briscoe and Howden, also started. Okey led for the first lap, but lost on the turn, Bacon winning by a yard. 66 Yards Handicap.—First heat: S. Hawke, <3sec, 1; A. V. Stohr, 2sec, 2. Four others competed. Second heat: R. Okey, 7scc., 1; W. Whitakcr, lOsec, 2. Chamberlain was the only other starter. Third heat: A. Bacon, Usee., 1; C. Brown, lsee., 2. Four competed. Final: A. Bacon 1, R. Okey 2, S. Hawke 3. These were the only starters of the | six qualified. Bacon had too good a I start, although Okey gained considerably on him. Hawke was never in it.
440 Yards Handicap.—Pfankuch, scr., 1; C. Brown, Osec., 2. Of a bunch of five, Dixon was the only other finisher. A. V. Stohr and Standish pulled out at the seventh,and ninth laps respectively. The winner caught Brown at the ninth turn and won in good style by twenty yards. Time, 7min 45sec. Mixed Dive.—A Maxwell 1, S. Okey 2. These two tied for first place, Maxwell winning in the "dive off." L. Goss, A. Bacon and Patterson also dived.
Corfu Dive.—Pfankuch 1, C. Brown 2. The winner found the belt every time. Bacon and Maxwell also tried their skill, the last-named causing rather a sensation among the spectators by his prolonged disappearance. Young Ladies' Race, 50 yards.—Miss E. Johnston, scr., 1; Miss R. Thompson, 7sec, 2. Also started: N. Crozier scr., Veta Gilbert 2sec., K. Penn 3sec, E. Tiplady and W. Tiplady ssec, and I. Thompson Osec. Miss Johnston won a good race by a touch. Boys' Race, 50 yards.—J. Haldane, 3sec, 1; L. Goss, scr., 2. A. Bacon scr., C. Bacon Ssec, and W. Ewing Osec, were the other starters. Haldane, who swims a "crawl" stroke, won comfortably all the way.
