DISTRICT NEWS.

OKATO. • The long-drawn-out tennis tournament between members of the local club has at last come to an end. Excitement ran high during the final games, especially in ladies' singles, when Miss F. Andrews won a keenly-contested game from Miss Daly by the narrow margin of two points in 30 lip. The gentlemen's singles was a rather hollow affair, as Mr. E. freedom won hard held, having gone right through the tournament from the scratch mark, ii highly creditable performance. If pitted against foemen more worthy of his steel he would 110 doubt improve considerably on present form. A special tennis afternoon on the clnb'.s courts was held hist Thursday afternoon to do honor to ,\lr. P. Boyle, who is aijmut to leave us and hie himself hack to his native land. Mr. Boyie has taken a great interest in the local Tennis Club and for three years was our energetic an l capable .secretary. We one and all wish him a safe and enjoyable trip. During the afternoon sides were chosen, married ladies v. single and married gentlemen r. single, and in each case the married parties proved the victsrs (a lesson to be learnt from the results). The lames of the club dispensed a very nice afternoon tea, and all went away when the shades of night were falling, having had a pleasant, and enjoyable time.

On Friday afternoon the Oka to Public School held their annual picnic in the grounds of Mr. H. Woolri'dge, kindly lent for the occasion, on the banks (if the Kaihihi, ii very picturesque spot. The weather xvas delightful, and the good things provided were thoroughly enjoved by the children, (.'nines and races for prizes were part of the afternoon's programme, and advantage was taken of the occasion to distribute the annual prizes (books) to tile children attending the school. The chairman (Mr. ,T. N. Fox) and committee were in attendance, and did all they possible could to make it a red-letter day for the children. A •special word of praise must be given to the ladies who worked so hard in preparing and assisting at the luncheon and afternoon tea. Mr. Snell, who met with an accident some few days ago, i.s progressing favorably, and no doubt will in? able to resume duties shortly. Tile contractors for the formation and nietallni!!' of Hcmpton and Perth roads are pushing along with their work, and no doubt, before the winter sets in most of their contracts will have been finished He greatest trouble seems to be scare11v 01 labor.
