EXPLORERS MISSING
IN WESTERN PAPUA. By Cable-Press Association-Copyright. .Melbourne, February 13. Anxiety is felt concerning the absence of Mr. Staniford Smith, Administrator of Papua, and a party of two white ollicers (Hell ami Pratt), twelve native police, and fourteen native carriers. They set out on November 18 for the coalfields, in the western division of Papua, which are very little known, to ell'ect friendly relations with the natives, survey the fields, and generally establish (lovemmeut authority.
They should have returned to the mouth of the l-"lv river on January (!, and the (lovenmu>nt steamer Merrie England was there to meet them. The vessel waited till January 31. and as there was no sign of Mr Smith and party she returned to Port Moresby for instructions.
Three search parties are being prepared. It is con-ideved the delay is probably due to illness, as the party was sufliciently strong to repel any ordinary attacks from natives.
