Mr. George Edlin, a pioneer settler, died at Petone on Friday, aged eighty years. Deceased arrived at Lyttelton in the ship Joseph Fletcher in 1850. A Cehirstcliurch press message reports that John Maddison, of Sockburn, who arrived in Canterbury in 1853, and wag one of the first farmers in Templeton, died yesterday, aged 81. Mr. E. F. Hemingway, who lias occupied the position of Town Clerk of Stratford for the past nine years, hab decided to enter the journalistic world, and wc understand will take over tfhe Patea County Press on March 31st.— Post.
The Rev. H. A. Favell has withdrawn his acceptance of the post of mission chaplain to the Archbishop of Brisbane, and has accepted work in the diocese of Waipu, where lie is now assisting the Rev. J. B. Brocklehurst as Vicar of Hastings.
Mr. J. uockrill, soii of Mr. E. Doekrill, who was compelled uy ill-health to relinquish his studies at the Dublin University and to return to New Zealand, lia.s, lr.t friends will be glad to learn, regained his strength, and will leave ou Friday to resume his medical studies at this seat of learning. Dr. R. C. E. Atkinson, M.A., M.8., CLB., D. Ph., formerly of Canterbury College, and later of Edinburgh and Cambridge Universities, has been appointed bacteriologist to the West Australian Health Department at Perth. He will leave Auckland on Wednesday to assume the duties of his new position. The following have been nominated for two positions on the Post Office Superannuation Fund Board: Messrs. Herbert H. R, Huggins, assistant accountant, Wellington; William McNiekle, postmaster, Bulls; Arthur T. Markmann, principal clerk, staff division, Wellington; W. R. A Press message from Wellington states that .Messrs. G. Allport, secretary of the Marine Department, Wellington, H. W. Bishop, S.M., Christchurch, H. R. Spence, collector of Customs, Invercargill, and Inspector J. W. Elliiiorr (representing tlio police), have been selected unopposed aa members of the Public Superannuation Board. Mr. Herbert Lightband, of Messrs. Govett and Quiiliam's insurance department, lias been appointed to take charge ol the local office of the United Insurance Co., Ltd., (for which Messrs. Webster Bros, are the district agents), succeeding. Mr. S. L. Mark, who has been appointed to an inspectorship in the Royal Exchange Insurance Co., Dunedin. An inquest was held yesterday afternoon at Wellington in connection with the death on Monday of Mr. A. A. K. Duncan, Deputy Public Trustee. Medical evidence was that the heart was enlarged, and the cause of death was evidently rupture of one of the diseased valves. A verdict waa returned in accordance with the medical testimony. Mr. Duncan was the son of the late Mr. J. Duncan, one of the very early settlers at Akaroa, and was 53 years of age at the time of his death.—Press Association.
At the annual meeting of the Taranaki auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society held last night several speakers referred in terms of the keeaest regret at the decision of the Rev. S. S. Osborne not to accept nomination as president for this year. The reverend gentleman has been for some fourteen years a most enthusiastic worker in the interests of the society. At every annual meeting in recent years -he has asked that some other member of the auxiliary should undertake his executive -work, but the meeting has always-succeeded in inducing him to accept office foiMtother term. This year, however, he definitely declined to act. Brougham Street Hall was the scene of life and gaiety last night, when the members of the Xew Plymouth Amateur Operatic Society and other musical friends met to bid farewell to their popular musical conductor and his wile, A'lr. and Mrs. f'. Cornwall. Close on 200 people were present, and the evening was spent sociably in dancing, interspersed with vocal solos, i|iiarteUes, etc. Solos were rendered by Messrs. Cornwall and Ward, .Miss Ainsworth aiid others, while there was tne quartette party from "Dorothy" anil otner items. I)uring the evening tangible tokens of esteem were pre-ented to Mr. Cornwall, Mr. E. Clarke making :• felicitous speech in handing the presentations to the recipient, The pupils of Mr. Cornwall signed a handsome testimonial, the text of which referred to the painstaking efforts of their master and the high standard of tuition received at his hands; tiio Society recognised Mr. Cornwall's worth as a conductor by presenting him with a testimonial signed by every member, and al>o a silver-mounted "inscribed ebony baton. Mr. Clarke, in his remarks, voiced the hope that it might not be long before Mr. and Mrs. Cornwall returned to reside in New Plymouth air.iin. Only those, he said, wllo had been intimately connected with Mr. Cornwall knew his worth. Tile success of ••Dorothy" was largely due to him. On behalf of the Society he wished Mr. and Mrs, Cornwall long life and prosperity. Those present accompanied Mr. Clarke's remarks with musical honors and hearty cheers. Mr. Cornwall was deeply affected, with the warmth and kindness of the reception accorded him. and snitanlv replied.
