OLD SOLDIERS' CLAIMS
MILITARY PENSIONS. A petition asking that a military pension be paid to veterans who took part in the Maori wars was favorably reported upon during last session, out never came before the House. Black, secretary of li.e Taranaki branch of the association, is in receipt of the following letter 'roni the general secretary of Ihe Veterans' Association, Wellington:—'-Afte.- c-.ueful consideration, Colonel Newal!, C.B. instructs me to inform you that as' the Province of Taranaki was tiia sc.cu« cf most of the struggles, Maori v. Pakeha, the veterans there should Dave the honor of taking the !ud this time in starting the petition to Therefore, put it into shape, get it signed by all yoiir ireirlicr?—o: the Maori war only—and return the same to me, when it will he signed by the Wellington veterans and passed on to all the other branches till finished. Then we will again present it to Parliament.'Colonel Ellis, vice-president of t'v local branch, prepared a draft petition, which was submitted to a meeting of veterans on Saturday and approved. It wa» decided that a copy of the petition be sent to the general secretary with the suggestion that he should write to the other branches of the association asking them to prepare similar petitions and get them presented to Pa-liament by the members for their respective districts.
A general meeting of Ihe Taranaki branch will be held on tae 23th inst.
