PERSONAL.
The Kaiser has recovered from an attack of influenza, accompanied by fever, which lasted three days. Mr. J. R. M. Stewart, inspector ol agencies for the National Mutual Life Association of Australasia, is on a visit to New Plymouth. Advice has been received that Mr. F. Wyndham Maunsell, Bon of Mr. J. F. Maunsell, of "Eridge," Masterton, has secured his M.B. degree at the Cambridge University-. Mr. Maunsell has been only two years and one term at the University.
St.' Andrew's congregation, Marton, haa unanimously agreed to offer a call to the Rev. A. Porter, of Roxburgh, Dunedin, to become its minister in place of the Rev. D. Gordon, retired. There is every reason to believe that Mr. Porter will accept the call.
Mr. W. Humphries has resigned from the position of secretary to the Piooees Settlers' Memorial Committee owing to ill-health. At a meeting of the committee on Saturday night, the resignation was accepted with regret, and appreciation of Mr. Humphries' work was unanimously expressed, together with the hope that he would soon be restored to good health. Mr. W. 1). Webster has been elected in succession to Mr. Humphries.
| His Worship the Mayor (Mr. G. Tisch) has received the following telegram from the Hon. T. Mackenzie, Minister of Agriculture:—"l would like to go over the district thoroughly, and to do so will require more time than I now can command. My visit on this occasion was really to show Mr. Dunlop, Scottish Agricultural Commissioner, with what time he bad to spare, something of the rich province of Taranaki, and I merely slipped in the run to Dawson's Falls as an extra. Ido not wish you to regard this as a Ministerial visit. I will return cm the first opportunity, and do Strata "~ r fbrd and the Mountain House, and on to New Plymouth, back to Stratford, and if time will admit, go through to Whangamomona. Kind, regards." In welcoming Councillors Hartnell and Buttimore to the Council as the representatives of East Ward, His Worship the Mayor at last night's meeting said that their stay would not be a long one. Ail the members would go out by effluxion of time on the third Wednesday in April. He heartily congratulated the ratepayers in having such gentlemen who were willing to come forward to represent them. "Personally," said Hig Worship, "I will be very pleased to give the new councillors all the information apd assistance that lies in my power, and [ am pleased to welcome them to the Council table." Councillors Hartnell and Buttimore returned thanks for' the welcome, stating that they would endeavor to work in the interests of the borough and the ratepayers of their ward.
Mr. John Lomas, who lias been appointed Secretary for Labor and Registrar of Industrial Unions, vice Mr. K. Tregear, retired, has served twenty years in the Department of Labor, 'having joined a few days after its inception. He had for some time previously been employed in the mines on the West Coast. After spending two vears in Wellington, ho went in 1893 to Christchurch as senior Inspector of Factories, a position which he held for twelve years. In 1905 Mr. Lomas was transferred to Dunedin, in which town also he filled the post of senior inspector. Coming to Wellington in 15)07, he was appointed Deputy Chief Inspector. Mr. J. Mackay, who was then Chief Inspector, died a few months after Mr. Lomas arrived, and the latter was appointed to succeed liim. Mr. Lomas lias been Chief Inspector of Factories ever since. Mr. Rowley, who will fill the position of Chief Clerk Deputy Registrar of Industrial Unions, and Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories, joined the Department in 1893 as a cadet, became accountant in 190G, and Deputy Chief Inspector in 1007.
