ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION
DEPARTURE OF THE KAINAN iIARU. By Telegraph, —Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The- receipt o!' a cablegram from Count Okuma, of Yokohama, advising the fact of a large remittance having been placed to the credit of Lieutenant Shirase, commander of the Japanese Antarctic Expedition, delayed its deppv.i'.re u few hours on Saturday. i in' money was obtained from thu U>i o;i iiank'of Australia, and is doubtless ijuended to meet the expense ol refitting the vessel in Sydney after the southern party is landed. The Kainan Maru is to land the eleven men who hopii to reach the South Pole, and return at once to Sydney, and then go back tu the Antarctic to cruise along the coast line which is very little known. Wellington yachtsmen gave the ven turesome explorers a good send-oil. Quite a dozen pleasure craft sailed down the harbor in line with the Kai*an Maru when she made for the Straits at 5.30 o'clock. The ferry steamer Duchess steamed around the little vessel while the crew were raising the anchors, and to show that New Zea j landers appreciate enterprise and bravery whether shown by European or Asiatic, a tremendous cheer went up from the passengers. It was answered similarly from the Kainan Mafu. Heavy weather from the south prevailed on Saturday night and to-day, I so the Kainan Maru had quickly met adverse conditions.
