A SCHOOLBOY DROWNED

COMPANION'S PLUCKY ATTEMPT AT RESCUE. By Talegraph.—Press Association. Duncdin, Last Night. A drowning accident occurred at Balclutha this afternoon, the victim being! Archibald McKenzie, aged 21 years. The deceased and a number of senior pupils of the Balclutha High School went for a bathe in the Clutha river, and after being in the water some time McKenzie got into difliculties. One of his companions, William Currie, promptly swam to MeKenzie's assistance, but the latter caught him round the neck, and both sank about five yards from shore in 18 feet of water. While under water Currie got free, and he made another attempt to effect a rescue, but again McKenzie caught him, and again both sank. Currie managed to free himself, and came to the surface, but McKenzie sank. Currie located the body, but was unable to raise it to the surface, and the body was recovered about thirty minutes later. The deceased was a son of Mr. McKenzie, of Puerua, and was studying for the teaching profession. Currie's action is very highly spoken of.
