SPORTING.

EGMONT SUMMER MEETING. SECOND DAY. Old Sol smiled his brightest cm the concluding day of the Egmont summer meeting, and a lovely breeze tempered tlie heat, making conditions most enjoyable for the very large concourse of turf patrons who attended the gathering. As on Wednesday, the racing was close and

exciting, and it is probable that better sport has never been witnessed on the

Hawera course. Three horses came to grief in the Hack Hurdle Race, one | jockey breaking liis collar-bone, otherwise the racing was all that could be desired. The Manaia Brass Band playeu a good programme of music, and the secretary, Mr. J. Turton, and his assistants saw that everything passed off satisfactorily. The totalisator receipts showed a large increase over last year's figures, the investments totalling £lO,778, the aggregate for the two days being £21,001), showing an increase of £6895 over the last February meeting. Favorites had a good run during the day, and the, public in consequence had a royal time. Proceedings opened with the Waimate Handicap, for which St. Bill started favorite. Sill, True Shot and St. Toney were backed in that order. St. Toney and St. Bill led all the way.

Manawliakaha and The Mystery were best backed in the Farmers' Plate. Sunrose made the running for sjx furlongs and then gave way to The Mystery. In the straight Manawakalia galloped over everything, and won very easily, giving Mr. Clout his second win in the gentlemen riders' events at the meeting.

There was heavy betting pn the six runners in the Eltham Hurdles, Maggie Paul, who went lame file first day, being withdrawn. Maidi carried more money than Playmate, and the others were poorly supported. The top-weight was made too much use of, and was easily beaten by Paul, who was in a forward position all the way- Maidi, as on the first day, shaped badly. Maori llille was the only withdrawal from the Okaiawa Hurdles fieid ( Starlike carried a few pounds more than Waitapu, and Chase Mab was best backed of the others. The race was a chapter of accidents, Lochguard ana Chase Mab falling, and Torbelle losing his rider. Norman Williams, rider ot Chase Mab, had his collar-bone broken, but the other jockey escaped injury. Mendip and North East carried most money in the Atkinson Memorial, and the favorite won handily after a pretty race. North East stood at the post and took no part. The Hack Scurry saw a great field of twenty-one runners go to the post. The favorite Avaunce got away well, but Montiform quickly headed her, and won in ridiculous fashion. Te Puia was the hottest favorite for the day when the tote closed on the, Normanby Welter. Tamainupo won all the way) and paul the best price of the meeting. Following are the details of the racing:—

WAIMATE HANDICAP, of 150 sovs; second 20 sovs, third 10 sovs from the stakes. Six furlongs. W. Palliser's br g St. Toney, svrs (St. Clements —Lady of the Lake) 7st 91bs (A. Whittaker) 1 A. Hall's b g St. Bill, aged, Bst 101b (W. Price) 2 C. Maybin's b m True Shot, 4yrs, Bst 111b (11. Gray) "... 3

Winning Post were in line, Rill being chopped out. St. Toney was well clear running along the back, but St. Bill closed up at three furlongs, Rill running last. St Toney was first into the straight, and won very comfortably by three-quarters of a length from St. Bill, who was a length in front of True Shot. Mulga Bill, Rill and Winning Post followed in that order. Time, lmin 15 l-ssec. FARMERS' PLATE HANDICAP, of GO sovs; second 10 sovs from the stakes. One mile and a distance. J. 2. From a good start Sunrose immediately took up the running, and led past the stand from Cloudy Morn and The Mystery, Manawakalia lying last. At tlie six furlongs Sunrose was two lengths in front of the The Mystery with Cloudy Morn next and Manawakalia still last. The Mystery was upsides with Sunrose three furlongs from home, and Ambergris and Manawakalia closed up rapidly. In the straight The Mystery momentarily flattered her backers, but in a Hash Manawakaha dasiied into tlie lead and Ambergris came with a rattle. Manawakaha easily held his own in the run home, scoring by a length and a half from Ambergris, Darby Paul the same distance away third. Then followed Rouge Dragoon, Cloudy Morn, The Mystery and Suurose. Time, 2min 1 4-ssec.

Cacmpbell) 9.10, Showman (C. Cochrane) 9.0. Playmate was fractious at the post, and when the field moved off lost a few lengths. The colors of Paul and Waterworks were first sighted, but before a furlong had hern covered Playmate had. joined' the leaders. Paul and Playmate were abreast running into, the straight, and the top-weight was in the lead passing the stand. Running out of the straight Paul joined Playmate again, and the pair were upwards of eight lengths in front of Showman. Then came Roscgrove and Waterworks, with Maidi a bad last. Four furlongs from home the weight began to tell on Playmate, and Paul had his measure before turning for home. Roscgrove started to move forward at the bend and caught Playmate inside the distance, but had no chance with Paul, who ran in an easy winner by a length and a half. Playmate was the same distance away, third, and the others finished as follows:—• Maidi, Showman land Waterworks. Time, 2min 49 4-r>see. At the second fence Lochguard fell, and on rising cannoned into Torbclle, the latter losing , his rider. At the fence in front of the stand Chase Mab took off too soon, and] came a cropper, Starlike narrowly averting disaster. Makahu was well ahead as the three remaining horses galloped ou: of the straight. Waitapu set sail after the leader at the six furlong post and was in front half a mile from home, Starlike closing up under punishment. Waitapu was clear of the opposition before turning for home, Makahu chancing his fences and Starlike, well beaten, toiling in the rear. The leader won, easing up, by over a length from Makahu, with Starlike a like distance away third. Time, 2niin 54sec.

Turning out of the straight Goodwin Park, Lady Mcnschikoll' and Mendip were his nearest attendants, The Reiver tailing off. Shining Star was two lengths in front of Lady Moiischikoff at the six furlong post, but Goodwin Park headed her in the next furlong. Mendip closed up a little in the run along tlio back, and was Shining Star's nearest attendant at the home turn. Here Goodwin Parle- and Lady Mcnschiiioff threw out challenges, and a great race ensued. At the distance Shining Star was under the whip, and Mendip rushed past him, winning fairly comfortably by three parts of a length. Goodwin Parkwas beaten by only a nose for third I place, and then came Lady Mcnschikoll' 1 and The Reiver together, and Tam Glen' last. Time, 2min lOsec. HACK. The Multiform colt cleared rignt out in the run home, and won in a canter by half a dozen lengths from Avaunce, who was over a length in front of Lady Van.
