CANADIAN WHEAT
THE CENTRE OF THE RECIPROCITY AGREEMENT. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London, February C. Mr. D. Mac Master, Unionist member for Chertsey, says there is a good deal of politics in the proposed reciprocal agreement between Canada and America. Mr. Taft has in view the dishing of the insurgent Republicans, while Sir Wilfrid Laurier is not unmindful of his influence being undermined by the Nationalists of Quebec. It is all important for the United States to get new sources of food supplies, and this necessity would have compelled the abolition of the wheat duty. THE FALLACY OF PREFERENCE. London, February 6. The Westminster Gazette says the fallacies of preference as a ccmentcr of the Empire are clearly shown to depend on the Canadian farmer doing something against his own interests, while the United States could have shattered the policy at any moment; indeed, it would have been forced to do so, not from unfriendliness, but to provide for the necessity of its growing ponulation. CANADA'S SUPPOSED LAPSE. THE HANDMAID OF THE TRUSTS. London, February fi. The Pall Mall Gazette discusses Canada as lapsing into unprogrcssive provincialism, and being the handmaid of American trusts and the contributor of Ihe fifty-first star of the flag which will rule the Continent. It was the duty of Home Imperialists to strain every muscle to prevent the threatened consummation.
A SUGGESTION FOR UNIONISTS. London, February 6. The Morning Post favors the Unionists dropping the scheme for the reform of the Lords and rallying to the object of the, Canadian Imperialists—preventing the ratification of the reciprocity agreement. The Morning Post adds: The United States hopes to supplant Britain as the centre of an Anglo-Saxon confederation, and unless Britain rouses herself she will lose the fairest heritage ever entrusted to a nation.
