SOLDIERS' GRAVES
DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER. By, Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Saturday. Replying to a deputation this morning, Sir Joseph Ward said his sympathies were entirely in accord with the laudable work of the Victorian League, but while £IOOO was voted last session for the restoration of the graves of old soldiers, he wanted a definite scheme for the systematic and proper upkeep of graves in all parts of the Dominion. He was prepared to authorise the expenditure of £IOO of the £IOOO for the erection of a monument in Auckland to the memory of the officers and men of the Imperial and colonial forces who fell in the Maori war, if a similar amount was raised locally. That would leave £9OO for graves, and if that was insufficient and the work had been carried out on proper lines, another £9OO would be forthcoming.
