SOFT DRINKS ON SUNDAYS
THE PREMIER'S VIEW. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Saturday. A deputation waited on the Premier this morning and complained of the attitude of the police in instituting prosecutions with respect to the sale of soft drinks on Sundays, even at table to customers instead of tea or coffee. Twenty-four summonses have been issued, and it is understood 104 more are pending. The police had stated that under section 17 of the Police Offences Act they had power to close refreshment rooms altogether on Sundays. The Premier promised to confer on the subject with the Crown law officials, ana if any hardship was inflicted by the law the only remedy was an amendment next session. Personally he was in favor of soft drinks being obtainable on Sundays, but it' was the duty of the Legislature to check any movement in the direction of initiating the system of general trading on Sabbath that was going on in other countries.
