AUSTRALIAN LABOR CONGRESS

ANOTHER PLANK FOR THE PLATFORM. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. Received 6, 5 p.m. Sydney, February 5. The Labor Congress carried a resolution that every member governed by an award of the Industrial Disputes Act should contribute to the funds of the union obtaining such award. This will make a plank in the fighting platform. In another resolution the Congress favored an increase in State members' pay to £SOO. SPEECH BY MR. HOLMAN. SAFEGUARD NEEDED AGAINST FEDERALISM. Received G, 12.20 a.m. Sydney, February 5. The Labor Congress reaffirmed the claim for absodute preference to unionists. It also resolved, after a heated debate, that the inter-State Conference, which draws up the Federal Labor platform, ought to be reconstituted upon a population basis, and that the conference elected on the present basis should do nothing but carry out such reconstitution. Mr. Holmas, the Attorney-General, in moving this, declared that unless the functions handed over to the Federal Parliament were safeguarded, he, and others like him, would be driven out of the Labor movement. Mr. Holman subsequently moved, "That tlie Labor movement opposes any further extension of the power of the Federal Parliament until the constitution has been reorganised upon lines which will secure Parliamentary supremacy." The discussion was adjourned till Monday night.
