DISTRICT NEWS.

TOKO. (From Our Own Correspondent.) An extraordinary storm occurred at Toko on the 2flth ult., when there was n display of lightning which must have beaten any previous record of the,.storm gods up this way, followed by a thunderclap which was calculated to awakeu the nightwatehnian in Hades. On the farms of , Messrs. Harry Milne and Ben Nctislroski, of the Waiwiri road, big trees were flattened to the ground, .shattered to matchwood and fired by lightning, all in the space of a second. To an eye witness the storm was awe-inspir-ing in the extreme, particularly so when out of the inky niackness. without any warning, there sprang into evidence liuge log fires, where the lightning had decided upon a bit of clearing on its own account. A Toko resident, not unknown in the columns of the Xews, is being approached with a view to his contesting the Stratford seat in the Liberal interest at the next election. Certain political organisations which have been preparing for what they believed would be a two-horse race a .state of perturbation at the prospect of a third starter facing the barrier.

Several thousand sheep have passed through Toko during the last month. This may be taken as an evidence that the East road country is adapted for the growing of fleece.
