The death of Mr. W. A. Balfour, an old resident of Waverley, is announced. Messrs. Wilson and Grey have been appointed solicitors to the Clifton County Council. Dr. Crozier, Bishop of Down, has buc-, ceeded Dr. Alexander aa Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland.— London cable. Mr. W. Noble, for some years stationmaster at Midhirst, successfully passed his solicitor's general knowledge at the recent University examinations. Mr. Gray, of Auckland, a director oj the Standard Oil Company of New Zealand, was a passenger by the Rarawa from Auckland yesterday morning. A London cablegram reports that Mr. Joseph Chamberlain took the oath in the House of Commons. His son Austen subscribed the name, and his father touched the pen. Prince Leopold of Battenborg and party arrived at Westport last night, after a pleasant trip down the Buller Gorge, and left by the Mapourika at 8 o'clock for Nelson and Wellington. Mr. J. D. Henry, the petroleum expert, and Mr. A. E. Watkins returned yesterday morning from Auckland, where they attended the dinner and. meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers. The London Daily Telegraph states it is reported that Sir John Fuller, M.P„ succeeds Sir Thomas Gibson CarmichaeJ as Governor of Victoria, the latter succeeding Sir Arthur Lawlcy, Governor of Madras.—Press cable.

The resignation of the Rev. S. S. Osborne, of New Plymouth Presbyterian Church, came up for consideration at the Presbytery meeting in Hawera on Thursday. The congregation and session were cited to appear in their interest at a meeting to be held at Eltham on February to consider the resignation. Mr. Joseph McCluggage, who is to contest the Stratford seat against Mr. Hine, is likely to take a trip to Queensland. His throat, which was showing signs of weakness, is now much better, and it is considered that a month or so of Queensland climate would now effect a complete cure—Eltham Argus. At the Taranaki Presbytery meeting in Hawera on Thursday, the Rev. J. R. Shore, moderator of Eltham congregation, presented a call to the Rev. F. W; Robertson, a probationer who has just finished his studies Knox College. The call was very well signed, and was heartily supported by Messrs. J. Ure Murray and G. D. Gow, commissioners from the congregation. The ordination will take place at Eltham Presbyterian Church on Thursday, February 10.— Star. |

Lieutenant Sydenham, R.N., who represents the Admiralty in New Zealand, and at least four or five of the member* of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers wilj visit New Plymouth next week for the purpose of inspecting the oil wells. The whole of the members of the Instituto have been invited, but afc present it is uncertain whether they can make the trip fit in with their movements. Should the invitation of the Taranaki Petroleum Company be accepted by them, they will be entertained by the company at a dinner, Mr. J. Allan Thomson, son of Mr. G. M. Thomson, M.P., and the first Rhodes scholar for New Zealand, has been invited by Dr. Mawson to join the Australian Antarctic expedition as geologist Mr. Thomson was appointed geologist for Captain Scott's expedition, but, owing to pulmonary trouble, he was forced to relinquish the appointment. During his stay at the Pleasant Valley Sanatorium, however, he has made a very rapid recovery, and is now engaged in geological field work in the Horae ranges near Palmerston. He is unable at present to decide whether he will accom* pany Dr. Mawson.—Press telegram.
